Woburn Public Library Hosts Spring Lecture Series
A Model-Art Industry: The Work of John Evans, Richardson's Architectural Sculptor, given by Ann Clifford, Curator of H.H. Richardson's Stonehurst in Waltham. The event will be held at the Woburn Public Library at 45 Pleasant Street from 2 PM to 4 PM, and is sponsored by the trustees of the Woburn Public Library with the Society of Architectural Historians, New England Chapter, Trinity Church, Boston, and Stonehurst, Waltham. Admission is free, and the doors will open at 1:45 PM. Clifford will discuss the work of John Evans, a British carver who routinely worked with H. H. Richardson and set up shop adjacent to Norcross Brothers, Richardson's builders. By embracing both art and industry in his growing sculpture studio, Evans became one of the most prolific architectural sculptors of late nineteenth-century America. John Evans is responsible for producing the elaborate sculptural program at the Woburn Public Library and may have had a hand in the carvings at H.H. Richardson's Stonehurst, the country home of social reformer Robert Treat Paine where Clifford is curator.
